The Schofield Barracks is in one of the more rural areas of Hawaii, near Wahiawa and Mililani, but Oahu is a small island with housing nearby. You have the option to use your BAH in two ways; by renting on post or renting/purchasing a home of your own off post.

Off Post Housing

The average price of a home in the Barracks area is about $509,000, about the same as the Hawaii state average. Rent in Honolulu County is about $1800 for a two bedroom apartment.

Wahiawa is a small city of 17,800 residents just east of the Barracks which is near the center of the island. Miliani, a city of 27,600, is southeast of post. To the east is the Waianae Kai and Schofield Barracks Forest Reserves. Downtown Honolulu, Hawaii's capital and largest city, is under a 40 minute commute from Schofield Barracks.

Additional nearby communities include Whitmore Village, Waipio, Waipahu, Kunia Camp, Pearl City, and Waimalu. These areas are within a 25 minute drive from Schofield. It doesn't take long to drive anywhere on Oahu; in fact the furthest points from north to south are only about a 1.5 hour drive. On Post Housing

Schofield Barracks on post housing is privatized and shared with Fort Shafter, under management of Island Palm Communities. Space is limited and applicants may be placed on a waiting list until appropriate space is available. There are about 1,100 officer grade units and 6,800 NCO grade units available for the base population of 55,000+ military and family. Housing units include 2, 3, and 4 bedroom structures, including apartments, townhomes, detached housing, and other styles. Kitchens are equipped; central air is generally not available.
